[ GUARDIANS OF SPIRIT ]

Cofradias were set up by the Spanish in the 16th Century to spread Catholicism to distant villages in New Spain. Still sacred places where prehispanic religion coexists with Christianity, cofradias persevere throughout Latin America. The cofrade members volunteer their time and money to maintain ornate altars and images of the saints. During fiestas they place the images on palenquins and carry them in procession. The pictures below are for a photo exhibition I am preparing that documents the cofradias from Mexico to Chile.
