[ COMING INTO ALAMOS ]


Alamos, Mexico is situated 12 hours due south of Phoenix, Arizona by fast bus. The highway is four-lane and safe to drive during daylight hours. You pass through a large part of the state of Sonora before arriving in Navajoa, where you head east through dry tropical mountains -- green even in winter months -- to arrive at the old mining town perched at 5,000 feet above the sea. Christmas is a good time to visit or, as I did, during the Day of the Dead events at the end of October. Watch slideshow
