Mayan Vision Quest: An Extraordinary Photographic Adventure
Date: October 27-November 4, 2010. See www.roadofawe.com for more information.
Join Chris Engholm and friends on a photographic and cultural adventure to the Highlands of
Guatemala. An expert in Mayan history and culture -- Manuel Barrios -- will join us as we travel to colonial Antigua, Lake Atitlan,
and numerous Mayan towns including Chichicastenengo. You will photograph ancient Mayan rituals against the spectacular backdrop of
the "Altiplano" region of Guatemala. On six similar trips, Mr. Barrios has arranged shoots for us in areas where
photography is normally not allowed. You will capture architecture in colonial Antigua, traditional marketplaces, shaman rituals, ruins, caves, cemeteries,
and the "seventh wonder of the world," Lake Atitlan. Our last night is spent photographing constellations and lava streaming down Pacaya Volcano outside
Guatemala City. You'll also visit with village elders in Santiago Atitlan and participate in a ceremony with local diety, Maximon. Five days of unforgettable photo
sessions. Small and medium format digital and/or film only; no large format. Light-weight tripods only. Workshop includes
follow-up critique roundtable and web posting of work. Call Chris Engholm for details.
Upcoming Exhibits
"Border Color"
Date: January, 2011 (Gallery reception date to be announced)
Location: The Chris Engholm Gallery in Solana Beach, Ca.
Thirty discoveries of 'found art' along the U.S.-Mexico border, lavishly printed in square format. Chris Engholm has produced the images in a high-key, sun-drenched style from medium format film. You forget these colorful abstractions are gathered in one of the most dangerous urban landscapes on the planet.
Past Exhibits
"Eternal Esperanza"
Date: March 18, 2008 - September
Location: The Artscape Spring and Summer 2008 Exhibit, at the Riverside County Administrative Center at 4080 Lemon Street, Riverside CA
The Esperanza Fire that raged near Banning, California in October, 2006 claimed five firemen and destroyed 34 homes. Chris Engholm has been making panoramic photographs of the 40,000-acre burn area on a weekly basis, recording the wounded landscape and its slow but inevitable healing. These are wide-format prints that form a rotation of images that lead the viewer from season to season in the aftermath of California's worst wildfire.
Note: Some of these images are currently on display at the Artscape Spring and Summer 2008 exhibit at the location above. It's a wonderful exhibit of work by Riverside area artists.
"Legends of Guatemala"
Incidents of Travel in a Realm of Myth, Magic and Maize
Date: April 25, 2008 - May 12, 2008
Location: Reflective Image Gallery, 211 E Columbine Ave, Santa Ana, CA 92707
(click for map)
Reception: Friday, April 25, 2008 from 5:30-7:30pm
For the past two years, Chris Engholm has photographed
in Quiché, Tzutujil, and Ixil villages, witnessing daily life and ritual first-hand, not to mention climbing erupting volcanoes
and wandering ancient cities like Copán, Tikal, and Quiriguá. On the shores of Lake
Atitlan in the village of Santiago,
he came to know and photograph village elders, shamans, and caretakers of Maximón, the revered local saint and spiritual
leader. In this series of 45 richly colored photographic prints, we experience "legendary" Guatemala and its surreal blending of
indigenous animism and Christian
devotion. Like the country itself, the pictures extend one’s perception of color and underscore
the tension between indigenous and modern identity.
